Have you redesigned your website or restructured your product categories? Maybe you’re updating your e-commerce product range and want to reorganise your keyword groups without losing valuable keyword history. This simple 3-step guide will walk you through the process.

Before you start: Important notes

  • No Unclassified Keywords: Ensure none of your keywords remain in the default “Unclassified” group. If you find any, create a temporary group called “To be classified” and move those keywords there.

  • Keyword Quota: If you’re already using 100% of your keyword quota and plan to add new keywords during this reorganisation, you might hit your limit. To avoid this, delete unwanted keywords before starting. If you’re just reorganising without adding new keywords, you don’t need to worry about this.

Step 1: Export and edit your keywords in CSV

1. Export your current project keywords in “SEO tool format”.

2. Open the exported CSV file in Excel using the semicolon “;” as a separator.

3. Edit your keywords and groups as needed:

  • You can add or remove lines freely.

  • Keep the first row (header) unchanged.

  • Fill in all columns for each keyword:

Column

Description

Adgroups

Name of the keyword group

Keywords

Keyword or phrase

Engine

Search engine: Google

Country

Country code (e.g., fr, en)

Language

Language code (e.g., fr, en)

Device

desktop or mobile

City

City name (see list of supported locations)

Target Url

url

Tip: If you want a keyword to appear on multiple engines, devices, or cities, create separate lines for each variant.

Important: Always assign a group name, even if it’s just “To be categorised later”—to avoid losing track of keywords.

4. Save your edited file as CSV UTF-8 with semicolon “;” separators.

Step 2: Delete existing keyword groups

To replace your old groups with the updated ones (while keeping keyword history):

  1. Go to Edit > Manage keyword groups in your project.

  2. Select multiple groups by holding Ctrl (PC) or Cmd (Mac) and clicking groups. Use “Select all groups” if needed.

  3. Click Delete to remove these groups.

  4. Click Approve to return to your project.

Step 3: Import your updated CSV

  1. Click Add a "New keyword", then open the CSV upload tab.

  2. Select your updated CSV file (CSV download) and click Validate.

  3. The system will check your file for errors like missing columns or incorrect city names, fix any issues if prompted.

  4. Click Confirm Import to upload your new keyword groups.

What Happens Next?

  • Your keywords keep their full history, now organised in the new groups.

  • New keywords will start calculating immediately.

  • Any keywords missing from your CSV file will be moved to the “Unclassified” group.

  • You can delete unclassified keywords if you no longer want them.

That’s it! You’ve successfully reorganised your keyword groups without losing valuable data.
