The Google SERP is constantly evolving

The Google SERP is constantly evolving. Long gone are the days when simple links appeared on the search results. Google Results can now take several forms called “SERP Feature”.

Google SERP Features

SERP features are the different types of results that Google puts forward in the search results (SERP). They can take different aspects such as: rich snippets, images, maps, direct answers, shopping, local map, etc.

They aim to offer a more informative and direct search experience to users, providing them with more visual answers than a simple link to their queries.

As a result, the famous "first position" no longer has the value it had a few years ago. It is therefore necessary to know the different search results in order to be placed in the Google SERP.

At J+ Search, we have mapped different types of SERP features that we detect, so you can understand the impact it can have on your campaign and therefore take the necessary actions to increase your visibility on Google.

Universal Search

Google’s Universal Search refers to the practice of displaying various types of search results, beyond the traditional text-based results, in its SERPs. By incorporating these results in its ranking calculation, Google aims to provide users with a more diverse and comprehensive set of search results.

Maps

The map universal search is a SERP feature which appear when user search a local query.

In these type of universal search, we can see 2 different rich snippets:

Local Pack & Local Teaser

Local Pack

Local Pack is a type of rich snippet which we can find in the map universal search.

For keywords that Google deems to have local intent (think "bike shop in Los Angeles" or "gastroenterology specialists near me"), the SERP will often contain a Local Pack containing the three physical locations Google deems most relevant to the keyword.

Local teaser

Local teaser is a type of rich snippet which we can find in the map universal search.

Similar to a Local Pack, this is a three-pack of local business results (mainly hotels and restaurants) shown on a map, with additional information below like hours of operation, reviews, and images. Options to sort (e.g., by price or rating) are also available.
